Are You Thirsty?

Today is a milestone for me! I reach 30! Not thirty years old, but 30 posts have been written on my blog!  Yippee!  It’s quite an accomplishment considering it took me 3 years to write the very first one!  It’s been quite a while since I turned 30 years old, though.  Long enough, in fact, that after turning a certain other number (I’ll keep it to myself), I decided I would grow a year younger each year.  I’ll be 30 again in a few years! I know I’m cheating!  Hey, it’s my birthday game and I’ll play it how I like!

It’s funny how certain times in our lives like milestone birthdays, the birth of a first child, the death of a parent or “empty nest syndrome” can bring us to a place where we’re looking inside and also outside of ourselves for satisfaction. Birthdays are especially good about bringing us to a place of contemplation about where we are in life.  Have we attained what we thought we would by this time?  Have we reached our full potential?  These questions enter everyone’s mind now and again. It’s all too easy to  become thirsty for what you haven’t achieved or what you haven’t attained, grasping to reach those goals before you leave this earth as if there isn’t anything left afterwards. This can be good or bad. It depends on what you grasp for to fill your cup of thirst with. You can try to fill it by getting a promotion at work, reaching another rung up on the corporate ladder. You may decide to have another child, buy another piece of jewelry or dump the person you’re with and get another one. People do these things everyday trying to quench a thirst deep inside. It may help temporarily, but it won’t help for long. The reason?  We the human race just can’t get enough, can we?  We just get thirsty again. God’s word addresses thirst many times because He knows us. He knows our weaknesses and He knows our appetite and what we”ll try to drink to fill us up. Thanks be to God that He gives us a big heads up!  He points us in the right direction, to where we need to focus our attentions so that we don’t keep drinking from a bottomless well and eating until we are so fattened that we just vomit it back up. He tells us how we can fill the God-shaped vacuum in each of us. A vacuum He himself designed up to have.

Psalm 42:1-2 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for Thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

John 4:13-14 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

Revelation 7:16-17 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun beat down on them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb in the center of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them to springs of the water of life; and God shall wipe every tear from their eyes.

I’ll share a short bit from a website that has a great study titled “Quenching Our Thirst At God’s Fountain”. By J. Hampton Keathley, III.

An old tale from India about a young man seeking God

He went to a wise old sage for help. “How can I find God?” he asked the old man. The old man took him to a nearby river. Out they waded into the deep water. Soon the water was up just under their chins. Suddenly the old man seized the young man by the neck and pushed him under the water. He held the young man down until the young man was flailing the water in desperation. Another minute and he may well have drowned. Up out of the water the two of them came. The young man was coughing water from his lungs and still gasping for air. Reaching the bank he asked the man indignantly, “What did that have to do with my finding God?” The old man asked him quietly, “While you were under the water, what did you want more than anything else?” The young man thought for a minute and then answered, “I wanted air. I wanted air more than anything else?” The old man replied, “When you want God as much as you wanted air, you will find him.”3

For more of J. Hampton Keathley’s study visit the website link.  It’s an excellent read!

So how thirsty for God are you??  Just look at what you’re doing, thinking or searching for and that’s your answer.

It’s okay to have goals we should as long as we’re alive, we just need to make sure we’re not trying to fill our tanks with them. Because we’ll always eventually be running on empty. Okay, that last thing I just typed made me think of a secular song so applicable to this post.  I’ll share the lyrics.  I never liked this song!

Running On Empty Lyrics by Jackson Browne

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one
I don’t know where I’m running now, I’m just running on
Running on – running on empty
Running on – running blind
Running on – running into the sun
But I’m running behind
Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don’t know when that road turned onto the road I’m on
Running on – running on empty
Running on – running blind
Running on – running into the sun
But I’m running behind
Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don’t know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that’ll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too
Running on – running on empty
Running on – running blind
Running on – running into the sun
But I’m running behind
Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I’d love to stick around but I’m running behind
You know I don’t even know what I’m hoping to find
Running into the sun but I’m running behind

*** Running where?  Running to the next thing that will fulfill them temporarily ***

Fill My Cup Lord by Richard Blanchard

Like the Woman at the well I was seeking

For things that could not satisfy

And then I heard my Savior speaking:

draw from my well that never runs dry
Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up, Lord!

Come and quench this thirsting of my soul;

Bread of heaven, feed me ’til I want no more-

Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!

VERSE 2:
There are millions in this world who are craving
The pleasure earthly things afford;
But none can match the wondrous treasure
That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord.

VERSE 3:
So, my brother, if the things this world gave you
Leave hungers that won’t pass away,
My blessed Lord will come and save you,
If you kneel to Him and humbly pray:

Need Some Lovin Today?

Thinking about the old song What The World Needs Now Is Love“. Maybe you’ve heard it. I was in diapers when it came out, but it’s been recorded so many times.

Here’s the lyrics to the song as written by Hal Davis

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don’t need another mountain,
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross,
Enough to last till the end of time.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.

Lord, we don’t need another meadow
There are cornfields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen, lord, if you want to know.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love,
No, not just for some but for everyone.

No, not just for some, oh, but just for everyone.

As I was thinking about the lyrics of this song. I wondered what message was the writer trying to pen for the world to hear? Seems to me that it’s about acceptance and we all need to love each other without condition. Maybe Hal had in mind the prejudices that people have towards others that are different from themselves. I can’t really determine what the definite meaning or point is behind what was written. Usually when a writer writes you can read between the lines of what they’re writing and find some hints at what they may be thinking. At least that’s what I’ve always been told. Probably some truth to that.

I was reminded of God’s unconditional love today because I’d seen a photo on Facebook. I pondered the unconditional part. Yes, God does love us without condition. We don’t earn it, we just aren’t good enough to ever be able to earn God’s love. And yes, He does love us all.. How can He not. He is love! Scripture tells us in (1 John 4:8) Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. His love is the Agape form of love. The highest form of love. Having said that, God is also Holy and even though He loves us, we have to make a choice as to what we will do with God’s love. Will we accept His perfect gift of love or reject it. Being a Holy God, unholy people such as ourselves will not be able to enter into His presence. So he had a plan and made a way for us to enter into His presence. And we can enter into His presence not only after death, but in prayer here on earth. And that was made possible through His son Jesus.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
—John 3:16, KJV
So as I think of the song above I think that what the world really needs is to accept what God has given. To accept Him and His son that died for us. That is love. You see even when we love each-other it is not an Agape love. Our love is flawed, because we are flawed. I hope you’ll accept God’s gift of Jesus and experience real love. There’s nothing sweeter in the world!

1 Corinthians 13

New International Version (NIV)

13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b]but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Do You Know Which Road You’re On?

Where are you going?

Recently took a road trip and had to drive through Atlanta, Ga. If you’ve ever driven through Atlanta you know that it’s like a winding mass of multiple lanes. Roads exiting right and left and special roads for HOV, whatever that means? With all the traffic and distractions it could be easy to get off on the wrong road and find yourself lost. Sure you may only lose a few minutes of your pre-calculated arrival time at wherever your destination is, but we never want to do that, do we? Why waste precious time being lost and having to figure out how to get back on the right road? Life is a road and we’re all on it. Some of us drive fast and burn rubber like a hot rod car all souped up. Others of us are like economy cars and we’re cautious. We drive a little slower and stop along the way for a road break every now and again. I suppose it doesn’t matter what your vehicle of choice is, but it does matter which road your on. Since life is a journey and we’re all headed to the same destination, which is death. Take time to think about where your road will lead you when you finally pull up to that last point of the map, destination eternity. Will it lead you to eternal life with Jesus? Or will it lead you to separation from God and damnation in Hell? Yes, it’s a scary thought, but just because it’s scary doesn’t mean you need to avoid thinking about it. A traffic accident could happen at any time and then your procrastination will make it too late for you to decide. If you’re in a undecisive place, do yourself a favor and determine which road you will follow. Which path will you take? Then trust that God will keep you on it. Your part is to keep your focus on where your going. We are all wanderers on the earth and it’s not our home.

Love the old song “Wayfaring Stranger“.

I’m just a poor wayfaring stranger
I’m traveling through this world of woe
Yet there’s no sickness, toil nor danger
In that bright land to which I go
I’m going there to see my mother/father
I’m going there no more to roam
I’m only going over Jordan
I’m only going over home

I know dark clouds will gather ’round me
I know my way is rough and steep
Yet golden fields lie just before me
Where God’s redeemed shall ever sleep
I’m going there to see my father/mother
S/he said he’d/she’d meet me when I come
I’m only going over Jordan
I’m only going over home

I want to wear a crown of glory
When I get home to that good land
I want to shout salvation’s story
In concert with the blood-washed band

I’m going there to meet my Saviour
To sing his praise forever more
I’m just a going over Jordan
I’m just a going over home

Who will you meet when you go home?

Matthew 7;13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

Have You Ever Been In Awe Because Of God’s Love For You?

Have you ever been in awe because of God’s love for you?  I have!  It’s amazing that He loves us despite all the times we let Him down and have been so un-like His son Jesus.  I wrote a song about it and thought I would share the lyrics and the video clip.  I hope you enjoy it.

Verse 1
Looking at the pieces shattered all around
The house so quiet, can’t hear a sound
Just my tears, as they fall

Verse 2
Fragments they’re like memories, made of broken glass
There to remind me, of a broken past which was my life
So long ago

Chorus
I wanna know why He, loves me like He does
I wanna know why He, cares for me
I wanna know why He, showers me with His love
I wanna know, I wanna know

Verse 3
He took this broken vessel and my tattered past
Put me back together and made a looking-glass
So I could see, Oh He’s so strong yeah yeah yeah

Verse 4
And for His love and mercy, I will bless His name
He is God almighty, worthy to be praised so I will praise
I will praise Him

Chorus Repeat

Reprise
Your worthy of glory
Your worthy of praise
Worthy of honor may your name be raised
You came along and you healed my life
You took all my darkness and gave me your life
And I wanna know..
