I ask for your wisdom today. Help me to discern your voice and apply your wisdom to my life’s circumstances today. While forgetting all that I know or think I know, I’ll rely on what you do know. Help me see more clearly the path ahead and establish my steps as I take each one in submission to you. Relaxing in the knowledge that my steps are those that you have for me to take. May I humbly press towards your will and purposes for your kingdom. Draw me closer to you as I walk and keep me forever inside your will, which is a safe haven for me.
Forever your daughter.
Being in God’s will is a very popular topic of study for a lot of Christians. We all want to be where God wants us to be don’t we? I know I wrestled with the will issue a lot as a new Christian. I remember struggling internally over different situations, not knowing which course to choose, fearful that I would somehow miss God’s will. Part of my problem was, I’d made so many wrong choices when I was living apart from God, that I felt unsure of myself. Myself is the key word here. I was depending more on myself than on God to lead me. I had to learn to trust that God would guide me and that I didn’t need to depend on myself, to choose the right course of action. Nowadays when I’m praying about a situation or decision, I’ve come to know that God will indeed guide me. The main thing I need to do is, not jump back into the seat of authority. I hope these guide lines help you to hear God more clearly.
- Pray that you can discern what the Holy Spirit is telling you..
- Ask for God to reveal anything within your spirit that may lead you astray. (Example: sin, selfish gain or greed)
- Check to see if the situation is addressed in scripture.
- Test the answer against God’s word. It shouldn’t contradict.
- Seek out godly advice. Is the person you’re going to for advice consistently following and living a life for Christ?
- Ask for prayer
- Make sure you are at peace. You may feel slightly nervous if God is asking you to step into something different, but peace will over-ride any nervousness you may have.
Sometimes it takes a while before you get an answer. The best thing to do it that situation is wait.
A great bible study that I highly recommend is Experiencing God, Knowing and Doing the Will of God, by Henry Blackaby.
We serve and awesome God! He can do more than we can ever think or imagine. He is powerful! We however are not. We can only do what God allows. Before you become troubled by the fact that you’re not in control of your own life. Think again! How many wrong decisions and mistakes have you made in your life up until this point? A lot? Same here! So instead of thinking you can run your life better than God, just hand it over to Him willingly and pray about your concerns
- Pray with confidence
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.(1John 5:13–15)
- Know God hears you if you’re in right relationship with Him (see more)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
